Soak the jewellery for 15–20 minutes. Gently brush behind and around the diamond with a soft, clean toothbrush – this is where lotion and dust collect. Rinse under running water (close the sink drain first!) and pat dry with a soft lint-free cloth. What to avoid Bleach, chlorine (swimming pools) and harsh household cleaners – they can harm gold alloys. Toothpaste or abrasive powders – they scratch the gold. Putting on rings before creams, perfume and hair spray. Put jewellery on last. Gym, gardening and heavy work with rings on – a hard knock can bend a prong. Storing Diamond can scratch other jewellery and even other diamonds. Keep each piece in its own pouch or a lined box compartment. Check the setting Every few months, look at the prongs with a magnifier or gently shake the piece near your ear: a loose stone may click. If a prong looks thin or bent, stop wearing the piece and bring it to a jeweller. White gold re-plating White gold has a rhodium finish that wears slowly with daily use. When you see a warm tone, re-plating makes it bright white again. Read more in 14K vs 18K gold. Professional cleaning Once a year, have the jewellery professionally cleaned and the setting checked.
